ahhh whoops. I just reread your post and you have your book.

looks like you have a semi automatic camera. Where you can change the dial to change the scenes that you want to shoot. ie fireworks, candle etc etc.

this being the case you dont have full control over the individual components. ie f stop, aperture, shutter, iso.

is this right so far??

Sounds like it.

Aperture F2.8-5.0 (2 steps / wide) F4.2-7.1 (2 steps / tele)

found this on a review www.

this means that f2.8 is the biggest setting (eye wide open and the smallest focus) to f7.1 on the smallest end. (eye screwed down nearly shut and the largest focus (landscapes)).

just to clarify f2.8 is described as wide open in camera speak, meaning the arpeture blades inside the camera are open at their widest and this also means the smallest field of focus. small number, small focus.

your f7.1 would be described as stopped down or shut down or on its smallest setting meaning the aperture blades are nearly completely shut and this is also the largest field of focus. large number, large focus.

if any of you have a slr, take off the lens and look inside the front of the camera. for point and shoot, look into the camera via your lens. turn it on. click the shutter. see those things move. shut, open shut. that's the aperture blades. they are nice and wide at f2.8 and nearly shut at the highest f stop number you can go.

does that help to make sense??

I have a new photo to share with you all

Given Tiff's comments about eyes being important in photos I did some shots of some friend's kidlets today and paid some special attention to the eyes - this is one that I am particularly happy with = thanks for the great advice Tiff - you are a goldmine of photo information.

thanks girls

Mandy it is a Nikon SLR of some description - all the finer details I would have to go looking for. My very first digital camera was a Nikon and I was heartbroken when it died - but now I am in love again - I have had a few digitals since that first love affair but they were just never the same
