I got my daughter a nice little Nikon - coolpix I think? Just under $100, and I have just as much fun with it as I do with my DSLR - in fact, I think I'm going to borrow it when I go to Camp Mojo in a couple of weeks time, rather than lugging my whole kit & caboodle over east with me! We found it at Big W fairly recently.
Sorry for the delay in answering your question as I've only just come across it.
I'm actually just started looking at a point and shoot for my daughter for her birthday soon.
I havent done any hard and fast research at this stage and I'm not really able to offer much of an opinion on them yet. Other than try out the one you want to buy. Mostly to see if there is a delay from pressing the trigger and it taking the shot. There is nothing that erks me more than that delay.
Scout Annie. Could you post what model type Powershot you have and if it has that delay???
I had a friend who went OS and she had a Panasonic DMC T26 and she was thrilled to bits with it.
Mines an A550, which is a few years old now. It does have a delay, but I'm so observant that I just had to go and take a picture to check if it did or not
thanks everyone hoping my sister and I might get to go shoping tomrrow I have been happy with my olypmus and found a few canons to look at not sure there will be much in the shops around here and I want one yesterday not sure about there new special camera batteries seems hard to find anything that takes AA now after I just bought new ones and a charger I seem to manage to take 200 to 300 when ever I go out
gypsy. take the batteries with you tomorrow when shopping. you just may find a camera that suits you and those batteries.
be sure to let the store person know that you have them and see you can utilize them.
make sure you can pick up the camera and actually take a couple of shots. have the store person put in a memory card if it needs it to take the shot, and batteries. If they wont do it, walk away. They really dont want you as a customer bad enough to help you out.
test for that shutter delay. check to see what memory card it takes. Can you repurpose the one you already have.
aim for 10MP up. try out the zoom lens and ask if it has the image stabilizer or vibration reduction.
praps print this out and take it with you.
happy shopping. if all else fails try this oneline shop. I get all my gear here and its far cheaper than over the counter shops.
My sister has a Nikon Cool pix and loves it and I believe they are reasonably priced
Hope you found one Gypsy
I have to share a cute story about replacing a camera :-
I still chuckle when we were on our cruise there was this dear old lady (She was 89) and she had one of the first Sony digital cameras (the ones with the really tiny screen minimal features etc) and it finally after 18 or so yrs died on the boat - she was devastated and we were in the camera shop and she couldn't understand why the man wouldn't fix it - (She paid over $600 for it back then) and he was trying to explain to her she could get something 100 times better for under $150 she just wasn't going to settle until I explained it to her and that he wasn't trying to just sell her something but that it was impossible to fix it - poor thing bless her in the end she ended up with a new camera for $99 and was proud as punch
