oops - here's the rosella with aphids and ant. Tiff would appreciate any comments on these, please. And really, really appreciate the time you're putting into this.

what a great shot Helen - the bright red background shows up the aphids so well - I dont know how it quailties as macro - I will leave that up to the expert however I really like the shot.

Actually in fact I like it so much that I think you should print it out, grab your scrappy supplies, jump on a plane and come keep your sister company next weekend while you scrap it

Helen. You've done so very well.

The first one is a rippa. great focus, great blurred background, good lighting, terrific colours!!

The hibiscuses look a bit soft on the focus, but it could be the how the attachment thingy in the forum (mine looked shocking, but much better if I loaded the images via Photobucket). You've got the idea. Close, with thought to the composition, the lighting and the point of interest. They look so delicate with the lovely light coming thru the petals.

Aphids must be running rife atm. This is a great attempt, again the focus is a touch soft.

Well done Helen. Make sure you enter one in the comp.

Thanks Tiff. I think the soft focus thing is either me or the camera, much as I'd like to blame software! I could see it as I took the shots, and it was possibly a combination of movement and bad light??? The rosella was in another part of the yard with more light, and the sun was trying to come out by then.

I've uploaded the rosella!

I reckon you've answered your own question.
Better light = faster shutter = less blur from camera shake or the bloom moving.

you are on your way knowing your camera now chicky dee.

you are soooo close Annette. All you need to do now is crop into the photos to get rid of the excess distractions.

ie the first shot you could do a tight pano crop (20cmx10cm) and situated the suject on the left side of centre for added interest. Or you could do a 6x4 crop or a square crop and place the ice on the left. Google rule of thirds. That will give you an idea of what I mean.

the same with the second shot of the dew drops on the blades of grass. Choose the dominant blade that is the sharpest in focus and really tight crop it to exclude the rest.

see how you go.

good to see you still having a go. Don't forget to enter it in the gallery folder to have a chance of winning that prize.

cheers
Tiff :)

I think I'm starting to get it. Here are my edits of the two shots. If nothing else, I've discovered how to crop to a set ratio!
