Trisha. good try. Just be aware that some things that are closest to the lens make look rather larger than they really are. Hannah's nose is out of proportion to her face. The focus is off as well. I suspect that perhaps that the lens may have been too close and it was not able to focus. One of my lens doesnt start to focus unless I'm about 1.4 metres away from the subject. (focal distance). I do like how you've used her hair to frame her face and hide the background. As far as the BW goes, you'll need a bit more colour in the shot for good tonal range so it converts well. Ie a bit more darker colour. Her shirt on her left shoulder is burnt out (white) which means that there actually is no image there at all. It's just white and if you printed it, it would be just the white photopaper there with no ink. And that doesn't look so hot.
keep going. you've got a willing model by looks :O)

Ant. I would love to see this cropped as a square. That would be the really simple way to remove the background on the left side (fold up chair) and then perhaps a heavy vignette to hide the hose reel and the tips of the point plant on the right.
Vignettes can be used a couple of ways. 1. to subltle draw the eye into the shot, or, 2. to hid distractions.
Awesome catch lights. Lovely clear skin. Good tonal range with his blonde highlights in his hair to his dark eyelashes.
crop it, vignette it, and you've got a shot to be proud of it.

Gypsy. Muddy is probably the right word. Can you throw some more light onto your subject, or can you move it into sunlight?? Sounds like you may need darker darks and lighter lights, if that makes sense!!
