Looking forward to having a go at this - my younger two girls are usually pretty co-operative when it comes to having their photos taken, thank goodness! The oldest one might let me take photos, but then she makes me delete most of them (she's almost 16)! Better finish the housework & end of year paperwork before I get the camera out though, or I'll get growled at!

Karen. This is a great shot for all sorts of reasons.

You have catchlights in his eyes. That's those tiny pin pricks of white light in his eyes. Its the reflection of the flash and it brings his eyes to life.

And you've focused on his eyes so I am drawn to them.

He's looking down the barrel of your camera!!

The green balloon pops against his orange top. Great contrast and visual interest.

****TIP***If you go to scrap this shot down the track and struggle with the colours you can always turn a duplicate of this shot into a BW.

well done chook.

Whoohoo thank you Tiff, you have made my morning, I was trying so hard with this one... It was so hard to get him to look at me.. i had to use your trick, and played with some crinklely paper in one hand, while still trying to hold the camera.... still took 27 shots though giggle.. Am really liking my new camera. it's very very easy to use, was very surprised at how easy it was to get off my auto straight away.. ok, well after a few pics of the couch etc...

I have the same question as Gypsy, so when we get to the scrap your portrait part later in the month, can i convert it to B&W to enter the challenge??

Hugs

Karen and Gypsy.

Yes ladies. Go for it. You can edit, Photoshop, Picasa your image till your hearts delight, both for this challenge and the shoot it, scrap it challenge.

Bear in mind that the eye is naturally drawn to colour, but if BW works for you, go your hardest.

Karen that is a fabulous shot!! Just stunning!! Can't wait to see you scrap it!!

I'll see what I can come up with this month. My 15 year old sister loves posing for the camera, but I doubt she would work with me when I want her to! She does "silly" poses too but I'll see ;)

Or I might steal someone's kid for a couple of hours ;)

have just come across this wonderful 7 min video from Canon EOS website.
here
Its worth the look people. Basically it's an interview with a children's portrait photographer and he offers numerous tips on getting that better shot.

well worth the time waiting for it to download.
