If only I'd been a scrapper when my kids were babies - the photos I got of them would be so different to what I did get! Will have to wait for grandchildren now  (but not for a while yet thanks!).

We went out for a long drive yesterday, didn't take many photos as it was a very grey day, but we did stop at one place (Corrigin) and I took a couple of quick snaps of my DD#2, Sophie (who's 14). She wasn't really posing for me, I was just taking happy snaps really!

Camera (Nikon D3100 DSLR) was on auto/portrait setting - really must try & get back onto the manual settings again, but I'm too lazy to practice enough for the best settings to stay in my very bad memory LOL!

What do you think Tiff?

Hey Pepper.

how about you print out the tute and have that in your camera bag as a prompt for settings to get you off Auto  (just a thought)

I'm guessing the first pic was taken in your car?? and as she was getting in/out?? She looks a bit suprized in the shot. The focus is slightly soft and not sharp on the eyes. I can see your flash light in her eyes which has created catchlights and she contasts nicely against the darker background.

The second shot has her nose in focus and soft on the eyes. Are you able to find a way to get the camera to focus on her eyes?? Can you move the focus points around?? And I reckon if you took just one step back or not zoomed in quite so close she would have room to 'breathe' within the shot. Again, its well lit and I can certainly see a bit of her character by her smile.

Well done chook. Keep at it.

tiff :)

Julie. your daughter has wonderful cheekbones. They really define her beautiful face!

Pussycat. I know it can be hard to get the 'geniune' smile, esp from teenagers. You've caputued the entire necklace which is lovely and gives a 'formal' feel to the imgae. I wonder if you are able to get her to step forward one step away from the shrubbery so that will blur more. You'll need to take one step back too.

***TIP***

The further you can get the subject to stand away from the background, the more the background will blur, if you are using a wide open arperture (small f number), say f5.6 or less.

Challenge for you Danni as it seemed you've had an easy subject so far!!. 8) Take a portrait of yourself. Some ideas are tripod the camera or resting it on something and using your 10 second timer so you can get in postion, using a mirror so you and your camera are in the shot, or...... doing a selfie - turning the camera around and taking a pic of yourself. No cheating and getting someone else to take the pic for you. Show me your best one!!!

And if anyone else wants to have a go, GO FOR IT!! Love to see what you all look like.

I'll do it too!!!!!

t
